Rising damp
Groundwater drawn up through the masonry by capillary action, because the damp proof course has failed, been bridged, or was never there in the first place.
- How you spot it
- A tide mark roughly 0.5–1m above the skirting that stays put, often with white salty deposits. It does not come and go with the weather.
- What fixes it
- A new chemical damp proof course injected into the mortar bed, removing any external bridging, then replastering with a salt-retardant render.
